The forthcoming generation of mobile\ncommunication systems (5G and beyond) is destined to offer ultra-high\ntransmission rates while at the same time providing services with very low\nlatency. In this sense, the planning of such systems in urban environments\nnecessarily requires the development and application of radiowave propagation\nmodels which evaluate the attenuation losses, mainly caused by the presence of\nbuildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Within this context, a review of the main\npropagation models existing in the literature will be carried out along with\nthe proposal of improved formulations -based on the Uniform Theory of\nDiffraction (UTD)- aimed at analyzing the so-called multiple-diffraction\nphenomenon, which leads to the loss that waves experience when they impinge over\nthe buildings rooftops. Finally, the application of such formulations when\nconsidering millimeter-wave frequencies will also be tackled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

JOS\u00c9-V\u00cdCTOR RODR\u00cdGUEZ was born in\nMurcia, Spain, in 1975. He received the Telecom- munications Engineering degree\nfrom the Uni- versidad Polit\u00e9cnica de Valencia, Spain, in 2001, after doing\nhis graduate thesis at the Lund Institute of Technology, Lund University,\nSweden, in col- laboration with Ericsson Mobile Communications AB, and the\nPh.D. degree in communications engineering from the Universidad Polit\u00e9cnica de\nCartagena (UPCT), Spain, in 2006. In 2002, he joined the Department of\nInformation Technologies and Communications, UPCT, where he is currently an\nAssociate Professor. His current research interests include the modeling of\nradio wave propagation in the mobile environment, with an emphasis on\nmultiple-building diffraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
